The article is an evaluative reply to a recent critique of competition-scepticals and DRG-critics in German health care politics by Hartmut Reiners, a renowned health economist and health policy practitioner. It aims at balancing both positions in reaching for a more thoroughgoing criticism of commercialization processes within (not only) the German health care state. It claims that the hegemonic modernisation project of competitive based cost containment policy might lead to commercialization processes by accident, acknowledging the difference between economization and commerzialization processes. It concludes that health care politicians might not in any case be able to control the political outcomes of their (seemingly) rational policy decisions.
