  • Market failures are endemic in health care. However, health economists are convinced of creating market efficiency by political regulation. The article questions such suppositions by showing that the model of the homo oeconomicus does not fit with the reality of interacting patients, health care providers and third-party-payers. It holds that the creeping commercialisation of health care will paradoxically desintegrate health care provision and weaken the steering power of regulatory bodies.
